How the math works

How much fabric do I need for a quilt?

Add up each fabric’s pieces by cut size. For each size, divide the usable bolt width by the piece width to get pieces per strip, divide the number of pieces by that to get strips, and multiply by the piece height. Add the lengths and round up to the next ⅛ yard.

How much fabric do I need for binding?

Add the quilt’s four sides plus 24″ for joins and finishing, divide by the usable bolt width and round up to get the number of strips, then multiply by the strip width. A 60″ × 72″ quilt with 2½″ strips needs 8 strips, 20″ of fabric, so buy ⅝ yard.

What size do I cut squares for half-square triangles?

With ¼″ seams and the two-at-a-time method, cut squares ⅞″ larger than the finished triangle square. Each pair of squares makes two triangle squares.

What is usable bolt width?

The width of fabric (WOF) you can actually cut from once selvages are trimmed, usually 40″ to 42″ for quilting cotton.
